Should you go for Breast Implant Surgery or not?

Most of today’s women are very concerned about their figure and some of them take great pains to maintain a good one. One factor determining a good figure is a women’s mid chest and any women who wishes to enhance this part of her body can go in for a breast implant surgery.

In order to gauge the worthwhileness of this surgery it is essential to understand the details. There are basically two types of breast implants available, the silicone implants and the saline implants. Silicone breast implants contain silicone gel whereas saline breast implants are filled with sterile saltwater or saline. The silicone implants were banned for many years due to reports of greater side effects such as lupus, fibromyalgia etc and also cases of ruptures. However, no concrete connection could be established between the two and hence the ban on them was lifted.

The choice between the two will depend to some extent on the existing size of your breasts, your body type and sometimes recommendations of the doctor. However, there are certain differential factors which determine the preference of one over the other. First and foremost, among them is the noticeability of ruptures. In case of saline implants, the rupture can be easily noticed as the breast shape changes rapidly over a few days with the leakage of fluid. In case of silicone implants, this is not so and their ruptures are often termed as ‘silent’. It is essential to get an MRI done three years after implantation and thenceforth once in two years.

As far as aesthetics goes, the look of silicone implants comes close to real breast tissue and hence they are most preferred. But the platinum content in silicone implants can drive away some women due to fear of it being harmful, though there is no conclusive evidence to suggest anything of that sort. Eligibility factor also cannot be ignored. If breast implant surgery is done for breast augmentation then it can be performed only on women who are 18 and above whereas the age limit for silicone implants is 22 and above. There is no age restriction for implant surgery done for reconstruction purposes. Breast implant surgery was first introduced in the USA but today, it has become a common prevalence. Keeping in mind the modern women’s needs, many surgical centres perform breast implant surgery in India, too.
