How does an artificial arm function?


Prosthetic arm or an artificial arm is used to replace a missing arm. Loss of arms can be caused due to an accident, disease or condition. Rehabilitation after amputation can be a traumatic experience for the patient.

However, with the advance in technology, a method has been developed to substitute the lost arm. A prosthetic arm serves as a substitute that can carry out the general functions of an arm. There are many types of prosthetic arms.

These are: cosmetic artificial arms, these are more natural looking and can perform some passive functions, mechanical arms are durable and light in weight, they can be of useful assistance in every-day life and myoelectric arm that is the most advanced technology by far. Artificial arm fitting can benefit the user in many ways. It is a technology that gives back the amputee their quality of life after their loss.

A lot of research and technology has gone into artificial arm fitting. The innovation is tested and tired and is safe for use for humans. Artificial arm innovations are available in India as well as other parts of the world. The arm is attached to the remaining portion of the person’s arm. It is controlled by the harnesses the user pulls and the user is able to pick up and grasp objects. Electronic arms can also detect the electricity in the muscles as the nerve system is electric in nature. This is used as a signal for the movements required by the hand. The user can also direct the artificial arm by signaling with the remaining muscles of the arm. Some of these arms have sensors that can detect heat or cold. These signals are sent to the skin or muscles of the human body. Artificial arm fitting is the biggest break-through in innovations referring to artificial body parts.
