Know what is Water Treatment Course all about?


Water treatment refers to the processes that make available water fit for use which could be for purposes of drinking, medicine or industry. In today’s times, waste water disposal has become a burning issue with strict regulations imposed by the government in this regard and hence there is a need for environmental friendly and cost-effective methods to be applied for their safe disposal.

In view of this requirement, various institutes conduct courses on water treatment in various parts of the city. The broad objectives of the water treatment course in Mumbai are manifold. Firstly, awareness about the various industries which generate waste water has to be created. Secondly, knowledge about the existing traditional treatment processes for certain industrial waste waters has to be given. Thirdly, new developments in the waste water treatment technologies have to be made known.

Normally a short course gives a broad overview of industrial waste water. Industries which are largely involved in the creation of large quantities of waste waters are taken as examples. The industries generally included are the likes of tannery, textile, distilleries, paper and pulp etc and the waste water treatment methods that are relevant to them. It discusses the wet oxidation process as a remedy for removal of stubborn and refractory pollutants from the water. In the context of petroleum refineries, the topic of bioremediation of oily sludge is covered. The effectiveness of applying pinch analysis for enabling waste water fit for reuse and recycling is discussed.

The participants of the course understand the problems encountered in the traditional methods of waste water treatment and also get knowledgeable on emerging technologies for the treatment of waste water. They become familiar with the research efforts and their effectiveness in treatment of waste water. Information on the sludge production and strategies for its management is gained by them. The faculty members of the course consist of people from the Environmental Science and Engineering background and other technical professionals.
